What do we hope will be true in the future? What must go well in order to make it so? 3 4 5 Vision: Aspirational, intended to reflect what you hope will be true about the City in the future. Strategic Outcomes/Goals: The “big buckets of things that must go well” in order for the City to be successful and achieve the Vision. What do you hope to get out of it? 7 Why is the strategic planning process important to you?What do you hope to get out of it? Elected body set goals so staff can move forward in alignment Helpful to understand priorities of new Councilmembers Want to represent community’s input in process ** Better understand the golden opportunities for us to focus on Find common language to address community’s needs and desires; provide guidance of what these mean Increase team approach/camaraderie & meet common goals Help staff better understand “why” of work* Increased camaraderie w/ elected officials staff; continue to build trust Listen to colleagues Make sure I hear common threads of priorities of Councilmembers & be able to articulate back to staff Turnover creates opportunities for new ideas Define what we’re communicating Decision support systems Gap analysis for the City 8 9 SLOC Strengths, Limitations, Opportunities & Challenges Strengths – What does the City do exceptionally well – what are our strengths? City tries hard to listen Collaboration b/n City units to accomplish goals Managing external partnerships – business community, Mayo Clinic, Destination Medical Center board, schools, County, Chamber Exceptionally strong staff Excels at core services Strong financial indicators – ex: AAA bond rating Funding opportunities – for infrastructure projects Balance b/n staff, not too much turnover 11 Limitations - What are some of the constraints or limitations the City has? Where do you struggle? Money – not enough to support all great ideas State & federal sources not always reliable Don’t have local control of all resources Not part of metro area where 80% of MN legislators are – a bit harder to get our message to State Because of great execution, can have some resistance to change Past partnerships – housing Staffing has been stable, but will be challenging to keep meeting needs at this level Life is busy for our residents Trust needs rebuilding 12 Opportunities – What opportunities should the City be prepared to leverage? Where can we innovate? Keep improving communication New staff Updating plans as our community evolves and grows Downtown area growing Strong employment Safe city 5B bond along with partners and Mayo attracting businesses Capitalize on this investment Growing city w/ lots of different perspective 13 Challenges – What gets in the way of progress for the City? What new challenges have emerged? Pace of growth – want to make sure we’re growing and planning intentionally Community engagement in our fast- paced world Increased visibility of where Rochester excels, and where we’re going – awareness of our local government We’ve taken on a lot of commitments we now need to execute on Narrow focus, don’t distract w/ “next shiny thing” Uncertainty about federal funding terms of funding No longer joint offices b/n City and County – now having to be more intentional about working together 14 True Today and In Ten Years What are three things about Rochester that are true today – and you hope they will still be true in ten years? - PINK What are three things that are NOT true about Rochester today that you hope WILL be true in ten years? - BLUE 15 What is TRUE about the City today that you hope will STILL BE TRUE in 10 years? Regional, national, and international leader in healthcare Culture of caring for the other Place of opportunity for employment & security Welcoming city cares about residents, neighbors, visitors Strong & vibrant parks and trails system Top economic driver for state Good job opportunities Safe city Caring community Low unemployment Good quality of life Great park & trails system Caring, compassionate, safe, & healthy community Financially strong People come here to do exciting work they can’t do elsewhere Youth can stay – opportunities and good economy Residents want more entertainment options Great place to live at all stages of life Active core neighborhoods Extensive trail network that connects parks and neighborhoods 16 Sufficient housing supply at all levels of affordability Robust transportation system for all aspects of daily life Fully ADA compliant and beyond Everyone has opportunity to succeed – food, housing, employment Meet UN sustainable development goals Sustainability & environmental leader Affordable daycare Enough housing of all kinds More housing opportunities More educational opportunities Diversity of employment opportunities for all citizens Wide diversity of housing options Housing for all, including eradicating homelessness Beacon of working together across political ideologies Being a healthy City is growing opportunity Housing and affordability are secondary issues Leadership reflects population 17 What is NOT TRUE about the City today – but you hope WILL BE TRUE in 10 years? 18 Wrap-Up 20 Wrap-Up
