WE Forum #rochmn
To create awareness of careers in construction for girls and
youth of color in our community, DMC Project Manager Jorrie
Johnson reached out to Rochester Public Schools Community
Education. She proposed utilizing the National Association of
Women in Construction Education Foundation
Create*Design*Build curriculum for a middle school or high
school class. Rochester Public Schools invited her to lead the
Create*Design*Build class for middle school students in the
Summer of Discover program at Kellogg Middles School in June.
The main classroom teacher Ms. Emily Wartsbaugh, an art
teacher at Kellogg Middle School, helped revise the curriculum
to meet the abilities of the summer program attendees who
ranged from incoming 6th to 8th grade students with varying
math and English speaking skills. The first day Ms. W welcomed
the class and set the classroom behavior expectations. Johnson
shared the City of Rochester Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Commitment Statement with the students and the MnDOT
Respectful Workplace guidelines. Students were asked to stretch
in the morning, just like they do on a construction site to get
ready for the work day.
DMC District Riverfront Small Area Plan draft maps were
provided to the students, so they could see what was is
currently in the DMC District. Students were also given
Riverfront Small Area Plan coloring sheets, colored pencils and
Post It notes to put what they imagine could be on the sites.
They generated creative ideas including a barber shop with an
adjacent basketball court, a new YMCA, a basketball gym with a
glass ceiling, a casino, restaurants, and even an indoor zoo.
The students were divided into groups of three to five
students and asked to select one building to create. They drew
their imagined project on graph paper and then doubled the
size of the drawing on foam core. They cutout and hot glued
the sides of their buildings together and to the base. They
drew or cut out windows and doors and even some built
furniture to go inside their building.
