CITY OF ROCHESTER
ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY
FUNERAL LEAVE
Purpose
When death occurs in an employee's immediate family, absence from work may be necessary
to arrange or attend the funeral or memorial service.
Polic
Regular full-time and regular part-time (regularly scheduled 20 or more hours/week) employees
may request up to three workdays (prorated for part-time employees) with pay to arrange or at-
tend the memorial service or funeral of a member of his/her immediate family.
Immediate family as used in this policy includes spouse, domestic partner*, fiancee, parent,
step-parent, parent-in-law, guardian, former guardian, child, step-child, son-in-law, daughter-in-
law, grandparent, grandparent-in-law, grandchild, great grandchild, sibling, brother-in-law, sis-
ter-in-law or a relative who is a member of the employee's household. The same benefits are
extended to the immediate family of a domestic partner which includes parent, sibling and sib-
ling's spouse, grandparent and child.
In addition to being granted up to three (3) days of funeral leave, the employee's department
head or his/her designee, using his/her discretion, may grant up to five (5) days of earned sick
leave to supplement the paid funeral leave for the funeral/memorial service of a member of the
employee's immediate family.
Time off work for attendance at funerals or memorial services for persons other than those listed
in this policy or for time in excess of the three days of funeral leave and five days of sick leave
provided for in this policy, must be arranged with the department head as vacation time, com-
pensatory time (bank reserve time), or as an unpaid leave of absence.
Procedure
The employee is responsible for promptly notifying his/her department of a death so appropriate
arrangements can be made to cover any absence from work. Factors the Department Head or
his/her designee may consider in granting up to five days of paid sick leave include funer-
al/memorial service location, closeness of the relative, and other pertinent information that the
employee chooses to share.
Payment will be at straight time, without shift differential added. The time does not count as
time worked when computing overtime.
*The definition of domestic partner is described in City of Rochester Civil Right and Domestic Partnerships Ordi-
nance, No. 81.
