MILITARY LEAVE
A. Military Leave
1. The City will grant a military leave of absence to any employee presenting proper
orders calling them to temporary active duty for training purposes with the reserve unit
of the United States Army, Navy Marine Corps, Coast Guard or a National Guard Unit
for a period not exceeding fifteen (15) working days in any one (1) calendar year.
2. An employee participating in military training which conflicts with his/her work schedule
and will exceed the 15 calendar days allotted for the year has the option to use
accrued paid leave or leave without pay.
B. Request for Military Leave _
The employee shall be required to submit a copy of orders or a formal statement from the
appropriate military commander as evidence of the employee being called to duty/training
to the appropriate department head. The orders or statement must be attached to a
"Report of Personnel Action" form requesting military leave. The request must be submitted
to the Human Resources Department for approval as soon after the employee is aware of
the scheduled date of the duty/training requirements as is possible.
C. Payment
Full-time employees who have been employed by the City for at least six (6) months
preceding a call to service who are members of the National Guard, or other reserve
component of the military or Naval forces shall receive their regular City pay when they are
engaged with such organization or component in training or active service ordered or
authorized by proper authority pursuant to law, whether for state or federal purposes, but
not exceeding a total of fifteen (15) working days in any calendar year.
D. Emergencies
When an employee is ordered to duty as the result of emergency, declared by state or
federal authorities, a "Report of Personnel Action" form is not required unless the time-off
exceeds two (2) calendar weeks.
E. Retirement Contributions
When an employee is called to temporary active duty beyond the fifteen (15) working days
in any one (1) calendar year, he/she may make contributions to Public Employee's
Retirement Association for that period of time beyond those fifteen (15) days when he/she
was not receiving regular pay from the City. The amount of contributions would be equal to
the same as if the employee had been working and the City will make its normal
contributions.
