AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING REID, MURDOCH &
CO./LIBBY, MCNEIL & LIBBY/SENECA FOODS CANNING
CO. WATER TOWER (A/K/A EAR OF CORN WATER
TOWER) A HISTORIC LANDMARK STRUCTURE,
REMOVING THE EAR OF CORN WATER TOWER FROM
HISTORIC INVENTORY LIST, AND AMENDING THE
OFFICIAL ZONING MAP AS REFERENCED IN 60.200.020(A)
OF THE OF THE UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT CODE OF THE
CITY OF ROCHESTER.
THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROCHESTER DO ORDAIN:
Section 1. The City of Rochester Heritage Preservation Commission held a public
hearing and made a recommendation for the Common Council to designate the following
property as a locally designated historic landmark structure as illustrated in Exhibits “A” &
“B”:
Historic Name: Reid, Murdoch & Co./ Libby, McNeil & Libby/Seneca Foods
Canning Co., Water Tower
Current Name: Ear of Corn Water Tower

Address: 1217 3 Avenue SE
Rochester, MN 55904
Legal:
That part of the Northeast Quarter of the Northeast Quarter of Section 11,
Township 106 North, Range 14 West, Olmsted County, Minnesota, described as
follows:
Commencing at the northeast corner of the Northeast Quarter of said Section 11;
thence on an assumed bearing of South 00 degrees 33 minutes 13 seconds East,
along the east line of said Northeast Quarter, 632.05 feet; thence South 89
degrees 26 minutes 47 seconds West, perpendicular to said east line, 374.00 feet
for the point of beginning; thence continue South 89 degrees 26 minutes 47
seconds West, 30.00 feet; thence North 00 degrees 33 minutes 13 seconds West,
parallel with said east line, 30.00 feet; thence North 89 degrees 26 minutes 47
seconds East, perpendicular to said east line, 30.00 feet; thence South 00 degrees
33 minutes 13 seconds East, parallel with said east line, 30.00 feet to the point of
beginning.
Containing 900 sq. ft. (0.02 acres), more or less.
Section 2. On January 8, 2024, the Common Council considered the reports and
recommendations of the subject property.
Section 3. On January 8, 2024, the Common Council of the City of Rochester

determined that the Ear of Corn Water Tower located at 1217 3 Avenue SE meets the
requirements to designate this area as a local historic landmark for the City of Rochester.
Section 4. Therefore, pursuant to section 60.200.040(C) of the Unified
Development Code of the City of Rochester, the Ear of Corn Water Tower located at 1217

3 Avenue SE shall be designated as a local historic landmark structure as illustrated in
Exhibits “A”, & “B” and shall be included to the official list of Landmark Properties.
Section 5. This ordinance shall be effective from and after publication.
