It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. Connect with real estate developers and investment professionals from around the region. She was helping her dad with home improvement projects. She says, “I fell in love with the hands-on work and seeing what I could do (with my own hands).” She originally thought about joining the carpenters union, but a friend and her father referred her to the electrical field. She started working at the Berkman Apartments in Rochester, spent time working on Mayo Clinic projects and is currently working on the Soldiers Field Memorial Park and pool project. She is now closing in on the end of her fifth year of apprenticeship. Mandy recommends to other women looking at joining the trades to “lean on your sisters.” She has met other women on job sites, through the union and through the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). She says, “I really enjoy the diversity in the work I do!” WOMAN-OWNED CONTRACTOR Last year, Nadeau Companies, LLC, a certified woman-owned company was the lowest bidder and awarded a project as a prime contractor on a City of Rochester Public Works project. In fact, Nadeau Companies, LLC won multiple contracts totaling over $4 million with the City of Rochester in 2023. Company co-owner Shonna Nadeau has been working with Nadeau Companies, LLC since 2001. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and worked for the Veterans Administration prior to joining Nadeau Companies, LLC in 2001. Over the last 23 years, she has learned a tremendous amount about the heavy construction industry and takes pride in the relationships they’ve built. She advises other small businesses to build a strong team including a CPA, an attorney and a banker. She also advises small construction businesses to get to know the industry and be prepared to finance the operations. Shonna supports women who want to work in the construction trades. Nadeau Companies, LLC employs a woman heavy equipment operator apprentice on their team who aspires to become a heavy equipment journeymen operator. The company firmly believes their biggest asset is their employees. Together their team takes pride in and performs prompt and professional excavation services. Women work in all phases and types of construction projects. Developing and designing projects, women have careers in architecture, engineering and design, finance, legal and business administration. Women also work in the construction phase of projects working as projects managers, plumbers, laborers, electricians, and heavy equipment operators. Construction has traditionally been a male- dominated industry, so we celebrate the growing number of women working in construction. CITY OF ROCHESTER WOMEN TEAMMATES The City of Rochester has women working in development.
