17. FIRE DEPARTMENT
17.01. Personnel. The fire department of the city shall consist of one chief and
persons designated as deputy chiefs, battalion chiefs, captains, mechanics, fire marshal,
assistant fire marshals, motor operators, fire fighters, administrative services managers and
support staff in such number as the common council may designate by resolution from time to

17.02. Supervision. The employment, promotion, discharge and suspension of all
officers and employees of the fire department shall be under the control and supervision of the
fire civil service commission for the city, created pursuant to resolution of the council duly
passed and adopted on March 2, 1931, and amended March 30, 1931, in accordance with
chapter 420 of the Minnesota Statutes.
17.03. Fire Prevention Bureau. The fire code shall be enforced by the bureau of fire
prevention which is hereby established in the fire department and which shall be operated by
the fire marshal under the supervision of the chief of the fire department. (3893, 10/20/08)
Subd. 2. Temporary Assignment. Subject to the rules and regulations of the
Rochester fire civil service commission, the chief of the fire department may temporarily
assign to the fire prevention bureau such members of the fire department as may from time to
time be necessary.
