HomeMy WebLinkAboutCHAPTER 52 CHAPTER 52. ELECTRICAL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Updated 2014 52-1 52. ELECTRICAL 52.01. Definitions. Subdivision 1. The meaning of terms used in this chapter shall be as defined in Chapter 50 and as follows: Subd. 2. “Electrical Code” means the National Electrical Code included as a component of the Building Code adopted in Chapter 50. Subd. 3. “Master Electrician” means a person holding a current Master Electrician’s license for the State of Minnesota, in compliance with all applicable bonding and insurance requirements. Subd. 4. “Minor Repair Work” means the adjustment, repair or replacement of worn or defective electrical equipment parts, and the replacement of receptacle outlets and manual switches for lighting control. 52.02. Permits. Subdivision 1. Permits Required. Except for minor repair work, no electrical system shall be installed, enlarged, altered, repaired, removed, converted, or replaced until an application for a perm it has been filed with the building official and the required permit issued. Subd. 2. Application for Permit. To obtain a permit, the applicant shall file an application in writing on a form furnished by the Department of Building Safety for that purpose. The application shall: A. identify and describe the work to be covered by the permit for which the application is made; B. describe the land on which the proposed work is to be done by legal description, street address, or similar description that will readily identify and definitely locate the proposed building or work; C. indicate the use and occupancy for which the proposed work is intended; D. be accompanied by construction documents and other information as required by the electrical code; E. state the valuation of the proposed work; F. be signed by the applicant, or the applicant’s authorized agent; and CHAPTER 52. ELECTRICAL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Updated 2014 52-2 G. give other data and information required by the building official. Subd. 3. Permit Applicant. All applicants for an electrical permit must be a master electrician or the owner and occupant of a one or two family residential dwelling at which the work is to take place. An owner/occupant applicant must personally perform all work covered by the permit. All electrical work must comply with the applicable sections of the electrical code. A permit may only be transferred from one applicant to another upon approval of a written request from the original applicant by the building official. Subd. 4. Validity of Permit. The issuance or granting of a permit or approval of plans, specifications, and computations, shall not be construed to be a permit for the violation of the code or of other ordinances of the city. Permits presuming to give authority to violate or cancel the provisions of the building code or other ordinances are not valid. The issuance of a permit based on constructions documents and other data shall not prevent the building official from requiring the correction of errors in the construction documents and other data. The building official may also prevent occupancy or use of a structure that violates the code or any other ordinance of the city. Subd. 5. Expiration. Every permit shall become invalid unless the work authorized by the permit is commenced within 180 days after its issuance, or if the work authorized by the permit is suspended or abandoned for a period of 180 days after the time the work is commenced. The building official may grant, in writing, one or more extensions of time, for periods not more than 180 days each. The extension shall be requested in writing and justifiable cause demonstrated. Subd. 6. Suspension or Revocation. The building official may suspend or revoke a permit issued under the code if the permit is issued in error; on the basis of incorrect, inaccurate, or incomplete information; or in violation of any ordinance, regulation, or code. 52.03. Construction Documents. Subdivision 1. Submittal Documents. Construction documents, plans, calculations, and other data shall be submitted in one or more sets with each application for a permit. Notwithstanding anything in this section to the contrary, the building official may waive the submission of construction documents and other data if the nature of the work applied for is such that reviewing of construction documents is not necessary to obtain compliance with the code. CHAPTER 52. ELECTRICAL ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Updated 2014 52-3 Subd. 2. Manufacturer’s Installation Instructions. When required by the building official, manufacturer’s installation instructions for electrical equipment and components regulated by the code, shall be on the job site at the time of inspection.
