HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-19-1941220 RECORD OF OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROCHESTER, MINN., February 19 ,19 41 Minutes of a special meeting of the Common Council of the City of Rochester, innesota, held in the Council Chambers, in the City Hall, in said City, on ebruary 19th,1941. President Lemmon called the meeting to order at 5:00 o'clock P.M., the ollowing members being present: Lemmon, Amundsen, Anderson, Bowers, Moody, illiams. Absent: Mrachek. The call for the special meeting was read, and President Lemmon ordered that the same be placed on file; said meeting haming been called for the purpose of considering any and all matters in connection with the suit of the City of chester, Minnesota against the North Side Corporation and others, and any other siness the said Common Council may deem proper. The City Attorney reported that the suit of the City of Rochester against the Northside Corporation, et.al., was dismissed by the District Court in favor of the defendant, which in effect left the buildings of the defendent within the recorded street lines. He thereupon recommended that a notice of new trial be given, and that if the court denied the motion for a new trial that the appeal be taken to the supreme court. Upon motion duly made by Alderman Moody, seconded by Alderman Williams, and carried, the recommendation of the City Attorney was accepted, and the City Attorney was authorized and directed to mane for a new trial, and in the event of the denial thereof to take an appeal to the Supreme Court, and he was authorized to incur whatever expenses necessary therefor. C. E. Ginther, Frank Springer and Frank Everett appeared before the Council and requested the support of the Council on a bill before the State Legislature to allow increased amounts paid to firemen's widows and children,etc. Upon motion by Moody second by Amundsen the Mayor and City Clerk were uthorized to confer with our Senator and Representative, and inform them that the Council are on record as favoring the passage of the said bill. The following communication was read and President Lemmon ordered that the same be placed on file: "TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA. WHEREAS: The -Rochester Junior Chamber of Commerce is an organization of oung business and professional men between the ages of twenty one and thirty ive years inclusive; and WHEREAS: The primary purpose of the Rochester Junior Chamber of Commerce is "to inculcate civic conciousness in its members and provide an avenue for the type of activi6y that conciousness will induce; and WHEREAS: Its further purpose is to encourage, cultivate and develope in its members the aptitudes and abilities that make for strong leadership, leadership of the type that will unselfishly serve the community honestly and well; and • u r� U • RECORD OF OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROCHESTER, MINN., February 19, 1941 z21 U • • WHEREAS: The Junior Chamber of Commerce is anxious, ready and willing to do its part in the advancement and development of our community and in its youthful exhuberance is of6en desirous of sponsoring ventures to that end which more experienced and mature minds hesitate to undertake; and WHERE'AS:.The Honorable Mayor and members of the Common Council of the city of Rochester, have, during the past year, given freely of their time and energy ti provide the citizens of Rochester with an energetic, honest and concientious city government of which we may all justly be proud; and WHEREAS: They have seen in the Junior Chamber of Commerce a group of young citizens who, like themselves, are interest in the development and progress of our city; and ' I WHEREAS: They have, in recognition of our desire to serve, appointed several of our members to positions of,trust and responsibility in tithe government of our city; and WHEREAS: They have lent us their full cooperation, encouragement and support in the projects -which we have undertaken to promote the welfare of the City of Rochester; NOW THEREFORE, We, the members of the Rochester Junior Chamber of Commerce, do hereby publicly express our appreciation and thanks to the Honorable Mayor and the members of the Common Council of our City for the unselfish leadership which they have given to Rochester and its citizens during the past year;.and for the recognition, cooperation and inspiration which they have given to our organization as one dedicated - like themselves,- to the improvement and development of Rochester. It is our hope - just as you have given ample evidence that it is your .hope - to provide Rochester with spirited, yet competent, capable, unselfish, honest and inspired leadership. We are young; we can learn only by doing, We are certain to make some mistakes. The cooperation, counciling, assistance and encouragement which you have always been willing to give us minimize the possibility that we will make any very serious errors. We seek and appreciate your help. May we always continue to work together in the interest of a finer and more glorious Rochester. Dated February 19,1941. ,. Mayor Grassle read a communication he had received from O.L.Kipp,Constructio: Engineer of the Highway Department, stating that it would not be possible to advertise for bids for the widening and paving of Broadway Street North, until the City Council of Rochester has taken action in regard to the removal of cer- tain buildings located within the right of way limits on this project, and upon motion by Williams second by Bowers the matter was left with the Street and Alley Committee and the City Attorney, with authority to go to SA.Paul for the purpose of confering with Mr. Kipp of the Highway Department. Upon. motion by Williams second by Amundsen the Council approved the : closing of all public offices in the City Hall on all national hollidays. The matter of the stolen car, stored at the Buick Garage was left in the hands of the Police Committee and City Attorney for investigation and report at the meeting of February 26th, 1941. Upon motion by Anderson second by Williams the Common Council adjourned. City Clerk.
