HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-24-194732Q Minutes of a special meeting of the Common Council of the City of Rochester, Minnesota, held in the Council Chambers in the City Hall in said City on July 24th, 1947. President Lemmon called the meeting to order at 7:30 o'clock P.M., the following members being present: President Lemmon, Aldermen Akenhead, Fox, Fryer,' Kennedy Kjerner, and Yaeger. Absent: None. The call of the special meeting was read and President Lemmon ordered • that the same be placed on file, the said meeting being called for the purpose of setting up Fire Department Personnel and any other business the Common Council may deem proper. Mr. A. H. Clemens, Attorney for the Contractor's Association, and ten contractors from the City of Rochester were present at the meeting and protested the new sidewalk ordinance— Mr. Clemens stated that the contractor's opposed the posting of a bond, as required in the ordinance, the specifications as drafted by the City Engineer, the number of inspections required and generally on the grounds of the increased cost. Mr. Walter Heasley was also present at the meeting and spoke in favor of the ordinance. A motion was made by Fryer, second by Fox, that the ordinance be referred for further consideration to a Committee consisting of three representatives from the Contractor's Association, three representatives from the public (to be appointed by the Mayor), the Street & Alley Committee, the City Attorney and the City Engineer. All voted in favor of the motion. The application of the Queen City Post No. 496 of the American Legion of the City of Rochester for an "On Sale" Intoxicating Liquor License was read and upon motion by Fryer, second by Yaeger, the license was granted. Alderman Yaeger made a verbal report for the Fire Committee and the Firemen's Civil Service Commission, recommending to the Common Council that ten men be added to the present Fire Department making a total of 43 men, consisting of one Chief, three assistant Chiefs, six Captains, eighteen drivers, one mechanic, one electrician and thirteen firemen. They further recommended that the rankings of the existing fire department remain the same for the balance of the city year. • Upon motion by Kennedy, second by Fryer, the recommendation was approved. tor, was present at the meeting and again Mr. George Leiferman, Real brought up the matter of the possible creation of a commercial zone to make possible construction of an apartment hotel building south of the Folwell School. • No action was taken on the matter.
