HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-10-1947AIM Minutes of an adjourned regular meeting of the Common Council of the City of Rochester, Minnesota, held in the Council Chambers in the City Hall, in said City on November 10, 1947. President Lemmon called the meeting to order at 5:00 o'clock P.M., the following members being present: President Lemmon, Aldermen Akenhead, Fox, Fryer, Kennedy, and Kjerner. Absent: Alderman Yaeger, due to illness. President Lemmon stated this as being the time and place set for receiving and opening bids for furnishing all -labor, equipment and material, not . furnished by the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and the Public Utility Department of the City of Rochester, necessary for the installation of Christmas Street Lighting. No bids were received. Alderman Fox, member of the Public Utility Board, reported that there might be a serious fuel shortage as far as the Electric Plant was concerned and recommended that the matter be studied closely before any additional load was added to the present load on the electric light plant. After, discussing the matter further.a motion was made by Fryer, second by Kennedy, that. the Lighting Committee meet with the Public Utility Board of the City of,Rochester, the Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor and the City Attorney to study the matter further and report back to the Common Council. The request of Rochester Lodge No. 1091, B.P.O.E. for permission to operate a bingo game on December 3, 1947 was read and the same was ordered placed on file. A plat of real estate owned by Stanley C. Mohn and Lavon R. Mohn (his wife), Haven H. Hodge and Jeanne M. Hodge (his wife) and Hattie Kruse and described as follows was presented to the Council and upon motion by Fryer, second by Kennedy, the said plat was approved and the City Clerk was instructed to have the same recorded in the office of the Register of Deeds: "Commencing for place of beginning at a point which is Four Hundred Thirty Five (435) feet East and Twenty- five (25) South of the Northwest corner of Lot Forty - Nine (49) in State Plat Section Thirty-six(36) Twonship One Hundred Seven (107) North of Range Fourteen (14) West in Olmsted County, running thence East parallel with the North line of said lot, Eight hundred eighty five (895) feet to the east line of said lot; thence South along the East line of said Lot Eight Hundred Eighty five and Thirty Four Hundredths (995.34) feet; thence North One Hundred Twenty (120) feet to place of beginning. " A letter from D. E. Ginther, Chief of the Fire Department, with a request from the Rochester Fire Fighters Association attached, requesting a change in their working hours from the present eight hour day to a twenty-four shift was read and the matter was referred to the Fire Committee for a report at the next Council meeting. Mr. A. R. Nachreiner, President of the Board of Park Commissioners, appeared at the meeting and presented a budget for the operation of City Parks 1 419 November 10, 194 during the fiscal year. He further requested that a levy of 4 mills be made for the operation of the parks during the fiscal -year 1947-1949 in place of the 3 mills as had been previously suggested by the Common Council. Mr. Axel Reed, Manager of the Mayo Civic Auditorium, was present and stated that improvements to the public address system at the auditorium and additional concession stands were necessary, the estimated cost of same being approximately $9,000.00. Alderman Kennedy introduced a resolution appropriating $9,000.00 from the General Fund and ordering payment made to the Park Improvement Fund for transfer of funds, which was read. Upon motion by Kennedy, second by Fryer, that the said resolution be adopted as read, and all voting in favor thereof, President Lemmon declared the said resolution duly passed and adopted. The matter of holding a public hearing on the proposed school and City budgets was discussed and upon motion by Fryer, second by Akenhead, it was decided to hold the said hearing at the Mayo Civic Auditorium on Friday, November 14, 1947 at 7: 30 o'clock P. M. The statement of receipt s-'andi•disbursements in the Park Improvement Fun( from April through October, 1947 was read and the same was ordered placed on file.
