Common Council- of. the City of Rochester,. Minnesota, held in the. Council Chambers, in the City -Hall, in said. City, on May 10, 1957- President Bach called the meeting* to order at 5:00 o'clock P. M., the following.members being present: President Bach, Aldermen Haas, -Morris,. Schroeder, Tingley, Whiting. Absent: Alderman Moody. The call of the special meeting was read and President Bach ordered the same placed on file, the said meeting having been called for the purpose of con- sidering certain adjustments in salary and wage schedules previously set by•the Common Council and any other business the said Common Council may deem proper. Mayor McQuillan stated that he had called this special meeting to con- sider certain adjustments in salary and wage schedules which he did not feel were fair. He stated that he objected to less than a 10% increase and listed the following resolutions as the ones that he was holding, setting salaries for the City Treasurer, the Street & Alley Department, the Fire Department (mechanic), the Board of Public Health & Welfare (garbage collectors) and the Park Department. He also asked the Council to reconsider the resolutions, which he had already signed, setting salaries at the Sewage Disposal Plant and the Parking Lot Attendants. He further stated that he did not feel that the wages as set were consistent, that the cost of living needs were higher and it cost one family just as much to live as 'another. He also stated that he felt salaries should be set as recommended by fact-finding commissions. Mr. Walter C. Hogenson, Superintendent at the Sewage Disposal Plant, was also present and read a letter to the Common Council from the employees at the Sewage Disposal Plant, which stated that the employees at the Sewage_DispIsal Plant were very, disappointed when they found that other departments had been given at 10% increase and they were only given 5 to 8%.increases. They felt if the cost of living had gone up 10% for some employees then their department should be_given further consideration and asked that the Council reconsider the salaries set for employees at the Sewage Disposal Plant. Alderman Schroeder stated that he would be willing to reconsider all the wages set which had not received 10% increases. Alderman Tingley stated that he was not in favor of considering just part of them, but would be willing to consider all of the wages again. Alderman Whiting stated that he would be willing to go over the resolutions but felt if any changes were made there would be other departments that would ask for further adjustments. He then made a motion that the Council do not reconsider any salaries set except the garbage collectors and common laborers. President Bach declared the motion lost for want of a second. After further discussion Alderman Tingley recommended that the Council take no action at this meeting and that the Mayor veto the resolutions, if he so desired, which would automatically bring them back to the Council for their reconsideration. -Z- ty Cierk 1 1 C 1 1
