Minutes of a special meeting of the Common Council of the City of
Rochester, Minnesota,.held in the Council Chambers in the City Hall in said City,
on July 13t-h-, 1957-.
President Bach called the meeting to order at 11:00 o'clock A. M. the
following members', being present: President Bach, Aldermen Haas, Morris,- Schroeder,
Whiting and Tingley.
The call';of the special meeting was read, the said meeting having been
called for the purpose of discussing ways and means of attemRting to get the
management of Rochester Bus Lines and striking employees together to settle the
bus strike and any other business the.said Common Council may deem proper.
Mayor XcQuillan stated that he had received many complaints in regard to
the bus strike which was now in its 27th day and felt the Common Council should
take some steps in trying to help settle this strike and get bus. service- continued,
Mr. Max Durand, of General Drivers Union No. $74, was present and stated that they
had met and tried'to meet with the Rochester Bus Company to try and reach an agree-
ment. He further',stated that; -they were asking for a 40-hour week at the same pay
and were willing to spread it over a 2 or 4 year -period, that is have a 44-hour
week for one year'land then down to a 40-hour week the following year. He also state
that they had ,tried to arrange further meetings with the _Bus Company and the .State
Labor Conciliator',but.had not had a meeting for quite a few days. Mr. Gene Haylett
stated that the Chamber of Commerce would like to do everything possible to end
the strike as soon as possible. It was reported that the reason representatives
of the Bus Company were not present was that they were attending the funeral of a
relative in Mankato. After a length discussion on the matter, a.moiion was made by
Alderman Morris that because of the public concern and interest in providing bus
service to the people of the City of Rochester and because of the same concern and
Interest in promoting a negotiated settlement of the current difference, between
the bus drivers and the Rochester Bus Company. Inc. the Common Council implores
the parties to exert every reasonable eff ort to reach an agreement and the Common
Council strongly requests the parties to meet in continuous bargaining sessions
until a settlement is reached. Alderman Morris further moved that the State Labor
Conciliator's office be notified of the concern of the Common Couaccil- for 'restor-
ation of public bus services to the citizens of the City of Rochester and that the
Mayor be instructed to request the State Labor Conciliator by telegram to use the
personnel of his office to aD uduct continuous meetings in the City of Rochester
looking toward a settlement of this dispute. Alderman Schroeder seconded the motion,
and all voted in favor thereof,
Upon motion by.Haas, second by Morris, the meeting was adjourned,
