Mayo. and Mayo Properties Association RESOLUTION WHEREAS, early in Rochester’s history, Dr. Charles H. and William J. Mayo recognized the urgent need of the City for a public auditorium of such design and size as adequately to meet the many civic requirements; and, WHEREAS, the Drs. Mayo wished to provide a suitable building which could serve as a meeting place for its citizens as well as its children, where fine music, athletic contests, public addresses, and outstanding theatrical productions could be made available for the community and its many thousands of visitors; and, WHEREAS, the Drs. Mayo also wished to address the dire need for employment in the community due to general business conditions with little work available and many men unemployed; and, WHEREAS, Dr. Charles H. Mayo personally contributed a sum of $150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand dollars) and Mayo Properties Association, of which Dr. William J. Mayo served as chairperson, contributed the balance of funds for purposes of constructing and outfitting a building suitable for cultural, social and recreational purposes; and, WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Rochester did adopt a resolution on February 7, 1938, accepting the generous offer of Dr. Charles H. Mayo and Mayo Properties Association for the construction of said building known as Mayo Civic Auditorium. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Rochester that the City wishes to acknowledge the substantial contributions of Drs. Charles H. and William J. Mayo and Mayo Properties Association, and recognize their continuing legacy. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that Presentation Hall will henceforth be known and named as Dr. Charles H. Mayo Presentation Hall. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that McDonnell Foyer will henceforth be known and named as Dr. William J. Mayo Reception Hall. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that Auditorium will henceforth be known and named as Mayo Civic Auditorium. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that dedicated displays within the concourse connecting Dr. Charles H. Mayo Presentation Hall and Dr. William J. Mayo Reception Hall shall henceforth be known and named Mayo Community Gallery, and feature a rotating display to include the center’s curated historical artifacts inventory or other museum quality displays as curated by Mayo Clinic. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that sustained recognition of the contributions of Drs. Charles H. and William J. Mayo and Mayo Properties Association will be afforded in perpetuity through an ongoing relationship established between the Mayo family, Mayo Clinic, and the City of Rochester.
